North Valley in Albuquerque, NM
87104 · Albuquerque, NM
The North Valley is the low, irrigated stretch of Albuquerque between the Rio Grande and Interstate 25, running north from Interstate 40 to the Sandoval County line. Spanish farming villages took root along its acequias in the 1600s and 1700s, and the ditches still cross back yards and pastures. Land here is split among the city, the Village of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque and unincorporated Bernalillo County, so zoning and lot sizes change from street to street. Cottonwood bosque along the river, horse farms, home gardens and postwar subdivisions sit side by side.
Spanish settlers farmed this floodplain from the 1600s, drawing water through an acequia madre and a web of smaller ditches; the long, narrow parcels called lineas that lined those channels still show up in lot shapes. A 1660s account describes the Tiwa mission village of Alameda, on the east bank near what is now Alameda Boulevard and Fourth Street, and a 1706 governor called the valley the last frontier the northern kingdom afforded.
Three governments share the ground: the City of Albuquerque, unincorporated Bernalillo County, and the Village of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque, which incorporated as its own municipality in 1958. The North Valley Area Plan covers all of it, so land-use rules come from planning documents rather than from a single association; dues attach to individual subdivisions and condominium projects.
The sub-communities mix eras. Vista del Norte, Spanish Walk, Thomas Village, Sun North Estates and The Villas A Condominium are platted subdivisions and attached-housing projects; Los Poblanos, Alameda, Alvarado Gardens, Griegos, Los Griegos, Los Duranes and Dietz Farms carry names from the farming valley that came before them. One more small community sits beneath the region.
Public land follows the water. Los Poblanos Fields Open Space keeps farm roads and ditch banks open for walking off Montaño Boulevard, Bachechi Open Space holds a short loop beside the bosque, and the Alameda Drain trail links the two for a longer walk. Rio Grande Valley State Park runs along the western edge.
Fourth Street runs the length of the valley through all three jurisdictions, with Interstate 25 forming the eastern boundary and Interstate 40 the southern one.
