Alameda in Albuquerque, NM

87113 · North Valley · Albuquerque, NM

Land / lots

Alameda is one of the original Hispanic villages of the Rio Grande valley, absorbed into Albuquerque and now part of the North Valley. It sits on the east bank of the river near Alameda Boulevard and Fourth Street, on ground where a Tiwa pueblo stood when Coronado came through in 1540. The Spanish land grant behind the name dates to 1710. Irrigation ditches still thread past fields, older ranches and newer houses. The bosque forms the western edge, with the Alameda open space and the north end of the Paseo del Bosque Trail.

Fourth Street was pushed north around 1900 to link Albuquerque with the villages of Alameda and Corrales. At the river crossing on Alameda Boulevard, picnic areas under old cottonwoods sit beside a constructed wetland built to stand in for the marshes the floodplain once held.
