University Heights in Albuquerque, NM

87106 · Central Albuquerque · Albuquerque, NM

Single Family

University Heights sits just south of Central Avenue and the University of New Mexico, on the East Mesa about a mile and a half from downtown Albuquerque. Its recognized boundaries run from Central on the north to Garfield Avenue on the south, and from Yale Boulevard on the west to Girard Boulevard on the east. Mayor D.K.B. Sellers, Harvey B. Fergusson and their partners platted the addition in 1906 and marketed the lots as the coming aristocratic residence section, banking on an extension of the city trolley that shaped the street grid. Brick cottages, California bungalows and modified pueblo revival houses filled that grid over the decades that followed.

The University Heights Historic District, bounded by Silver and Garfield avenues and Harvard and Carlisle drives, was approved for the State Register of Cultural Properties in 2025 and forwarded to the National Register. It is read as one of the earliest automobile suburbs on the East Mesa, and the housing along its streets spans several eras, with Craftsman houses standing a few doors from postwar ranch houses.

No homeowners association collects dues here; a voluntary neighborhood association recognized by the city speaks for the area instead. Roosevelt Park lies a short walk to the west, where a 0.65-mile loop runs under mature trees and the southern half climbs on packed gravel. The commercial stretch of Nob Hill picks up a few blocks east along Central.
