Santa Barbara-Martineztown in Albuquerque, NM

87102 · Central Albuquerque · Albuquerque, NM

Santa Barbara-Martineztown sits northeast of downtown Albuquerque, bounded by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, the BNSF railroad tracks, Menaul Boulevard and Interstate 25, with Interstate 40 crossing the northern half on an elevated viaduct. Manuel Martín and his family settled the ground around 1850 as a farming village, and the district grew after the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway reached town in 1880. Winding streets, irregular lots and adobe vernacular houses still set the pattern. San Ignacio Church, the Second United Presbyterian Church, Old St. Joseph Hospital and the Santa Barbara School are listed on the National Register.

The name covers two settlements that grew together: Santa Barbara runs from Interstate 40 south to Mountain Road, Martineztown from Mountain Road to Lomas Boulevard. The city annexed Martineztown in 1898 and Santa Barbara in 1948. South of Lomas, most buildings date from a 1970s rebuilding effort. A city sector development plan has set zoning here since 1990.

Santa Barbara Martineztown Park anchors the neighborhood's open space, with a community garden and a multigenerational center that serves both youth and seniors.
