Huning Castle in Albuquerque, NM

Huning Castle is the pocket of Albuquerque most people drive past on Central without ever noticing. Turn south off Route 66 anywhere between 14th Street and Tingley Drive and the city changes character inside half a block. Big trees. Quiet streets. Houses built back when this end of town was still being drained out of the river bottom. Buyers who go looking at Huning Castle homes for sale are almost always here on purpose, because they want the age and the location, not because they wandered in.

Where it is, and how it got here

The neighborhood sits in 87104, south of Central Ave SW and roughly a mile west of Downtown. Its association draws the boundary from the Albuquerque Country Club down to Alcalde, with Tingley Drive on the west and 14th Street on the east. Old Town is a short walk north across Central. The Rio Grande is four blocks the other way.

All of this was Franz Huning's 700-acre estate. His adobe mansion, the actual Huning Castle, stood near 15th and Central until it was torn down in the 1950s. The land was platted as the Huning Castle Addition in 1928, after A.R. Hebenstreit and Will Keleher bought it from the Huning family. The timing wasn't luck. The Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District was draining this bottomland right about then, which is the only reason anyone could build here. The Albuquerque Country Club moved to its Laguna Boulevard course the same year.

Then the crash hit. Only a few houses went up before 1929, and most of what stands today arrived after the Second World War.

The houses

You get two clear layers. The early one is late-1920s and 1930s revival work: Spanish and Pueblo Revival, Territorial, some Mediterranean, red tile roofs, thick stucco walls. The bigger layer is postwar, ranch and custom, running through the 1950s and into the 1960s. Coved ceilings, corner fireplaces, hardwood, detached garages reached off an alley. Lots are generous for a neighborhood this close in, and because the whole area was irrigated farmland the trees are genuinely enormous.

It's built out. New construction here means one lot at a time, usually a deep remodel or a rebuild behind an old wall. A handful of condo and apartment addresses along the Central frontage, including the gated complex at 1500 Central built in 2004, put some smaller units into the mix. That's why the range of what trades here is wider than you'd guess from driving the interior streets. Check the listings on this page for what's available.

What you can walk to

Tingley Beach is the big one, and it's the reason a lot of people buy here. Fishing ponds, model sailboats on Sunday, and a trailhead into the bosque that runs for miles north and south along the river. The ABQ BioPark zoo, aquarium and botanic garden are right there too. On a still morning you can hear the zoo from your back yard, which residents either love or stop noticing.

Old Town's plaza, museums and restaurants are a walk. Downtown is a bike ride. Every Christmas Eve the luminaria route comes through, and ABQ RIDE has been running its bus tour through Old Town and these streets for more than fifty years. Lovely to live on. Also means your block gets busy on December 24.

Commuting and schools

I-25 is a few minutes east on Central or Lead and Coal. I-40 is north via Rio Grande Boulevard. The ART line runs the length of Central, so Downtown, UNM and Nob Hill are reachable without a car. The Sunport is about fifteen minutes.

Albuquerque Public Schools zones this area to Lew Wallace Elementary, Washington Middle and Albuquerque High. Boundaries do get redrawn, so confirm with APS for a specific address.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

Be honest with yourself about old houses. Systems here are decades old unless someone got to them, some homes have no garage at all, and parking tightens up near Central. The Central frontage brings traffic, transit and a mix of commercial uses. If your list starts with a new build and a three-car garage, you want the far Northeast Heights or Rio Rancho, not this.

The neighborhood association is organized and it shows up. It fought the city in court in the 1990s and has more recently pushed a small-area plan to hold building heights and setbacks tighter than the citywide rules allow. If you value neighbors who defend the block's scale, that's a selling point. If you were planning to add height or a casita without a conversation, know what you're buying into.

For everyone else, this is one of the most established addresses in central Albuquerque, and nobody is making more of it.
