Estates at La Cuentista in Albuquerque, NM
Estates at La Cuentista homes for sale sit on Albuquerque's far northwest side, just below the West Mesa's line of extinct volcanoes and a short walk from the Petroglyph National Monument. Pulte Homes has been building the neighborhood in phases, and it's still filling in with new construction alongside a growing number of resales — not something you can say about most west-side subdivisions anymore.
Where it sits
The community sits off Unser Boulevard near Paseo del Norte, in the 87120 zip. Boca Negra Canyon, one of the developed units of Petroglyph National Monument, is close enough that plenty of residents walk it on a Saturday morning. Volcano Cliffs, the older golf-oriented neighborhood up on the mesa rim, sits just to the north. La Cuentista itself is the larger, longer-established area this newer section belongs to, built out over two decades by several different builders. Coors Blvd covers the grocery runs and the sit-down dinners; Cottonwood Mall isn't far either.
The land and the light
This is basalt-cap mesa country — flat to gently rolling lots, with a lot of homes catching either the Sandia Mountains to the east or the volcanoes to the west, depending which way the house faces. The architecture runs Southwest Contemporary and Territorial: stucco exteriors, low-pitched or flat rooflines, not much applied ornament. It's the look Pulte has used across its newer New Mexico communities, and because these are recent builds, buyers aren't stuck retrofitting insulation or rewiring for a smart thermostat — that's already baked in.
One thing regulars notice: the streets carry a literary theme — Twain, Angelou, Salinger, Brontë among them. Fitting, since cuentista is Spanish for storyteller.
Schools
- Elementary: Sunset View or Tres Volcanes, depending on the street — Tres Volcanes runs K-8, so some families stay in one building through eighth grade
- Middle: Tony Hillerman, on Rainbow Blvd
- High: Volcano Vista, right next door to Tony Hillerman
All three are Albuquerque Public Schools, and the pairing of middle and high school on the same stretch of Rainbow makes for an easy carpool.
Behind the gate
The subdivision is gated, and the association keeps its job narrow: dues go toward the common areas and the private roads inside the gate, not a long amenity list. There's a community park with a basketball court and open grass — that's about the extent of it. Nobody here is subsidizing a clubhouse they'll never use. It's a low-drama HOA by west-side standards. Covenants keep the streetscape consistent, but this isn't the kind of association that makes you clear paint colors through a committee for routine upkeep. Ask your agent for the current CC&Rs before writing an offer, same as you would anywhere gated.
Who it suits
This fits someone who wants newer construction without leaving the west side, and who doesn't mind a gate and a modest monthly due in trade for a tidier street and less through-traffic. It's a worse fit if you want mature trees or a walkable, built-up feel — this is still young high-desert landscaping because the neighborhood itself is young. If you commute downtown or out to Kirtland, time Paseo del Norte at rush hour before you assume it's a quick trip; it can back up.
